Alignment for Z-71

I need to get a alignment on my 96 truck. They want $130 to grind some ball joint plugs out. I have not looked at it yet. Anyone done this before? What all is involved??????

Re: Alignment for Z-71

When I bought my 96 k1500 Z71 in December I had the dealer do what ever it took to correct the alignment.

Turns out after 88,000 miles it was never aligned! No wonder it had new tires on it. The sales man mentioned it took 3 hours because of some knock outs that had to be removed or something.

Never did get to talk to the tech since I picked it up late in the day. I'd have them show you were these are. Maybe you can remove them and save some labor time.

Re: Alignment for Z-71

i'm guessing the truck still has the factory knockouts....$130...the place i go charges $49.95 for an alignment, plus $30 each side for the knockouts...i guess that spare $30 is labor???

just get them done now so your alignment will be set right, at least for a while....no need to go spending money for an alignment time after time if you're not going to ever really get it aligned.

Re: Alignment for Z-71

there the alignment bolts on the top A-arms that instead of haveing alignment cams from the factory the aline it and tack weld the washer to the frame.
the easeist way to remove this it to use an air hammer with a chisel and bust the tacks then pull the bolt asnd washer out and grind down the spot were the tacks were so that its flush. then put your cam kit in.

its a a pain if you dont have air tools, so it might be worth haveing the shop do.

Re: Alignment for Z-71

The Kidd,
I got the kits the other day and put them in just now. It was easy. The factory washers were not welded in??? Is that all there is to the knockouts??? Seems like they wanted to charge alot for just putting new bolts in??

usauly there tack welded in. Does it look like there is room for the bolt to move back and forth to adjust do the alinment. I think they can move like .5"-1"

looks like you lucked out. just make sure there is room for the bolt to cam back and forht.
