What\'s in my 88

Why kind of transmision do I have in my 88 blazer. Does it have a computer in it because its fuel injected? Oh and If I take the hard top off will the sides fall over? Its kind of rusty under it but not bad on the outside. Oh and the prevuiuos owner welded a metal plate and hinges to fix the tail gate. Thanks

Re: What\'s in my 88

Go to your local library and check out the Chilton's manual. It has all the ident. #'s you need. I'd guess it's a 350 trans and a 203 or 205 T-case, also I'm pretty sure it doesn't have a computer. As for the hard-top I don't see why the sides would fall off.

Re: What\'s in my 88

it should be the 700r4 and yes it has a computer b/c its a TBI injected motor. if the rust is so bad you are worried about the sides falling off when you take off the top then you got BIG time problems!! its not a full top, only the back portion so you still have the roof over the drivers seat area.

Re: What\'s in my 88

your 88 will have a computer, its located behind the glove box. If you have o/d you have the 700R4 trans, if 3 speed then you have the 350 trans.

Any fuel injected vehicle has a computer. No getting around that... It'll have a 700r4 transmission and likely an NP208 transfer case. Crawl under the truck and look on the back of the transfer case to find a small circular plate that lists the model case it is.

Re: What\'s in my 88

A stock '88 Blazer will have a 350 TBI engine that does have a computer, the trans (assuming it's an auto) will be a TH700R4 (4-speed automatic w/ overdrive), and transfer case should be a NP208. I believe the only thing the computer controls in the transmission is the torque converter lock-up. The basic shift points are still controlled by a manual linkage from the throttle body to the trans, called a throttle valve (TV) cable.

Re: What\'s in my 88

Yeah it has the np208. And a 350. How much horse power and torque should it have? As for the hardtop removal, is it heavy could 2 guys handle it? Thanks

Re: What\'s in my 88

The weight on the tops seem too vary by year/vechicle. I've read weights for a halftop like yours anywhere from 160 too 200 pounds, So yes 2 people could handle it but I think 4 whould be much better, One holding the back one on each side and one more for the front, There is less chance of it slipping and really messing up your truck or you in the process!
