Re: Transmission Ques..

TH400 is a 3speed Trans has been around since the 60's is normally installed behind a Bigblock Chevy. They are VERY strong and dependable well liked among the four wheel drive community.
700R4 is a 4speed Trans 3spd + Overdrive came out around 1981 this is a much lighter duty Trans normally come behind a smallblock, they had "ALOT" of troubles with these up until about 1987, then they changed it and made it "A LITTLE" stronger. the OD is helpful with gas mileage, but it is a very high gear and as soon as you put larger tires on the OD becomes SO high that it is Un-usable most of the time, unless you re-gear your axles. Plus the OD should never be used while towing.
Also the 700R4 is at least twice as expensive to rebuild.

Re: Transmission Ques..

TH400

1st: 2.48
2nd: 1.48
3rd: 1

700R-4

1st: 3.06
2nd: 1.63
3rd: 1
4th: 0.71

The TH400 in the '72 BB has been used and ABUSED for 28 years and the only thing that has gone wrong the a fried torque converter. First and second a little too high though.

The 700R-4 on the other hand... pros: great first and secong gears, cons: OD is too high and will not live long if abused.

Hit? Them tires rub. Rubbin's off roadin.
