TBI or Vortec?

Looking to purchase a used Yukon or Tahoe. I came accross a very clean '95 today and the price is fair. Only thing is it's TBI. Now if I choose '96 or newer, I may pay a bit more, but I'd get a vortec. If memory serves me, the 5.7L TBI had 210HP and the 5.7L Vortec had 265HP. The question is, is it worth paying the extra dough for the power increase, or will I be happy with the TBI? Gas consumption is also a consideration.

I'd say go for a 96 or newer. I know they get beter gas mileage and have more power. You also get a better looking dash IMHO.

Good points. Actually the dash, as well as the seats, were upgraded in the '95 model year.

Re: TBI or Vortec?

I personally would go with the vortec. Think about it, if you ever plan to do any engine mods ever you would be starting with 55 horses more stock on a 96 than a 95. Just food for thought.

Re: TBI or Vortec?

If memory serves me correct (it would be a first) the '96 vortec had 250hp and 335 ft lbs and the '97-up had 255 hp and 330 ft lbs torque.

Get the Vortec, esp if you plan on towing.

Hit? Them tires rub. Rubbin's off roadin.

Re: TBI or Vortec?

Thanks guys. RHStansbury had a good point about mods or upgrades. I've been thinking, it's cheaper to buy a TBI, but then I'll probably eventually start spending money on upgrades to try and squeeze more power out of it. What about reliability? Would the TBI be considered more reliable because it's a simpler system than the Vortec? Has anyone here had or heard of any major problems with the Vortec motors? I'm pretty much sold on the Vortec, unless you guys know of potential problems. BTW I've always been a Chevy man, I've owned five Chevy 4x4 1/2 tons and various GM cars in 12 years of driving.
