Vin Numbers

Hey guys,
Does anyone know a website that does VIN lookups? I need to know if my 3/4T 86 Burban was shipped with cats.

I think that it is a fleet truck which would mean that it was shipped sans cats. But I need to find out for sure before I take it to get it inspected.

Thanks,
Shaneb

Re: Vin Numbers

Shane, can't say for sure. But, if you have EGR equipment, chances are yes it had cats. If not, and you have the heavy duty version, then no it wasn't. Flip down the glove box, if the option sticker is still there, look for code C6P, thats the 8600lb GVW option which would not have had cats. Hope that helped.

Re: Vin Numbers

Thanks, I will look for the options sticker, but I have not noticed it, so I fear that it is gone.

I did have the EGR system, BUT the manifolds that were on it did not have the taps for the air tubes. Which, IF they were the stock manifolds, would indicate no cats, right? I will try the GM customer service number next. Wish me luck!!!

Any other way to identify the 8600gvw? I also have the factory load-variable rear brakes.

Thanks again,
Shaneb

Re: Vin Numbers

Sorry i dont know of any sites for vin #. However; When i replaced the pipes on my 85 GMC I had to look though tons of books to find the down pipes. I have a 454 industral motor that came out of a a old dump truck. i think. any way the ex mainfolds have 2 1/2 flanges and all i could find where 2 1/4. any way to make a long story short. the books said that the frist part of 85 was the last year with no cats and that mid year modles had them and tbi. The guy at the garge said the only way to tell for sure was to know if it had them was to look and see. dugh. i thought. any way they would not install pipes with out them so i did it. Hope this helps a little. around here no one cks for cats. so i can get away with none.

If it has tits or tires it will give you trouble.

Re: Vin Numbers

Hey,
You guys are great. That page gave me a lot of data, BUT the GVWR (as defined by VIN number) is seperated by thousands, so my Burban falls in the 8001-9000 which is does not tell me if it is under or over the 8600 gvw limit for cats, seatbelt, etc. I am back to tracing the vin number.

I am calling GM today. Does anyone else have any ideas?

Thanks again,
That page is bad ass.
