Questions about 1980\'s SUBURBANS

Im looking at several 1998-91 suburbans. They all seem to be leaking between tranny and engine is this to be expected? I found a nice 88 but the rear ac does not work and the heater fan has gone south, are these items easy to fix? Also what does it cost to rebuild or purchace new 4spd auto tranny? How much hp do these guys have? What kind of performance upgrades can be done and still be smog legal. Thanks.

Leaking between tranny and engine: Could be the front differential. Havent seen many that dont leak. Have not heard of leaky transmission at all on these.

Horsepower: 260-285 range?

Re: Questions about 1980\'s SUBURBANS

Not too uncommon to find pump seals leaking on these trannies. Not real hard to fix, but requires removal of the tranny. The TBI motors (350 or 5.7l) used in these trucks make right around 200HP (net). Tranny rebuild of 700R4 with R&R runs $1000 - $1500 depending on your area. Rebuilt trannies can be purchased for around $1000 (check Bow Tie Overdrives If the truck is approaching 100K miles, and the tranny has not been rebuilt, expect this expense in the near future, and negotiate it into the purchase price.
