400 motor swap, dipstick position change, help!

I am swapping in a sb 400 into a 86 K5 Blazer (with a 700r trans.), the old 305 had a passenger side dip stick and the 400 does not, I would prefer to go with cast iron exhaust manifolds (with the air injection setup) and was wondering if any one has been down this road and might have some suggestions as in regards to what might fit. Accesory brackets are a consideration also. Any help is appreciated!

I swapped a 400 block into my 92 4X4 a couple years ago. I used the 350 heads and stock manifolds with all the original accessories. The 400 dip stick cleared just fine. I would try a test fit before the engine is installed into the truck. If by chance it doesn't fit, you can fab a dipstick by brazing a bung into the oil pan, insert a 45 or 90 degree angle fitting for a flare tub. buy a length of line, and form it to fit where you want it. Leave some extra length on the tube. Once the motor has been started and run, insert the dipstick in the tube, and measure how far the oil level is from the full mark. measure this length on your tube and cut it off. Instant calibrated stick! Good Luck!

There are a couple options I can think of. One option would be have an engine remanufacture install a right hand dipstick mounting on the SBC 400 engine block. It is a very common procedure for the larger engine remanufactures to "convert" left hand dipstick engine blocks to right hand dip stick engine blocks.

The 85 305 Blazer heads will have the 7 bolt exhaust manifold bolt pattern. You will need to use heads on the SBC 400 that have the 7 bolt exhaust manifold bolt pattern to work with your old 85 Blazer exhaust manifolds.

Yet another option would be use an oil pan from a 78 or 79 Monte Carlo. The 78 or 79 V8 Monte Carlo used a factory oil pan that had an oil dipstick that went into the oil pan.
I used such a conversion a coulple years ago, and the oil pan and dispstick were still available from GM back then.
