herculine a boat trailer??

my boat trailer is looking really ruff and i was thinking about applying herculiner to it. does anyone know how the herculiner will stand up to salt water?

thanks

Re: herculine a boat trailer??

i would definitely advise AGAINST doing that to your boat trailer. the problem is that the rust will continue to spread UNDER the rubber coating, where you will not see it until it is too late. this happened to my uncles trailer that was painted. he was driving down the road and the thing snapped, sending the axle flying. if he had been going faster it could have seriously screwed up his boat. just like someone posted here not too long ago about frame rust under the factory under-coating. you want to at least see the rust and corrosion so you know when it is dangerous. the best thing is your situation is probably to sand/grind as much of the rust you can and maybe spray a can of primer over it, then get an aluminum trailer when the time comes

after a while, herculiner gets porous. not good for saltwater protection. i'll try to get some up close pics of mine.

Re: herculine a boat trailer??

i have rhinoliner in my bed and after about 5 months it gets the same way yours did. rhinoliner makes a product called rhinoshine for like 11 bucks. id bet that if you went to your rhino dealer and picked up a bottle it would work on the herculiner too. it does wonders for mine.

Mike, the bumper is custom made by my dad and myself. we built the one that you see in the pic, and the one that is on my dad's ram. i'll get a pic of that one when daylight shines in the morning.

Re: herculine a boat trailer??

'nuther view....as you can see in this pic, there is a cut out(on the bottom left skirt) for the trailer hookup. i just haven't gotten around to wiring everything together. right beside the license tag is the hole for the spare tire crank. and the lights were autozone's $1.99 license tag lights....which btw, provide a pretty nice glow. if you look very very close(or use your imagination), you can see that we cut two 1/4" notches(width of reciever tubing) on the bottom of the tag...then we just folded that little section back. that way the tag sits right below the level of the top tread. we made the hitch thing(part where the ball goes) as well.

Another option to the basic primer is to use either Eastwood's Corroless (http://www.eastwoodco.com) or POR-15.(http://www.por15.com)
Haven't used either myself but I'm planning on testing them sometime.
