Help with an 83 K5

Please help me, I'm looking at buying a 1983 K5 Blazer and I need to know what to look at. the owner said he's replaced the 305 with a gm350. Its also an automatic. what tranny/transfer is this, which axles, etc. Forgive me, I'm a Jeep guy!

Re: Help with an 83 K5

If they havn't been changed, the front end (if 4x4) is a 10 bolt GM, and the rear is 10 or 12. Is it a 4-speed auto(needs replacing)?? (Did they even have the 700-R4 back then??) Around here, in Maine, the floorboards are always gone under the drivers feet and the passengers. And usually in the back above the gas tank. 305, 700-R4, 3.08's, adds up to a slow, gas hogging heap. If the 305 has been replaced, make sure the tranny is a 350 or plan on replacing it. Also, might want to change the 3.08's.

Re: Help with an 83 K5

Yes, sorry to say, they had the 700R-4 in 1983. The 700R-4 in 1983 was a real piece of art! (Junk to say the least) Other than that it is a real good vehicle! If you are going to drive it as is, leave it alone. But if you are going to do anything with it, you will probably have to put a tranny in it. The ones from later Chevy pickups (1987) are probably the best, or go with a replacement from Jet! Good luck!

Re: Help with an 83 K5

don't forget to check for rust where the tail gate hinges hook up to the body. The first Blazer i bought ('84) i went to open the tailgate and it came off in my hands.
