5.3L Turbos

Hey everybody,
I'm going to rebuild my motor and tranny whenever one or the other goes out, but for now I want to begin the process of deciding what to put in my motor. I was thinking of using a Wiseco piston kit. I dont know if I should cam it or not, considering I get 8mpg as it is. I also dont want a supercharger because of the mpg issue. Has anyone put a turbo on their 5.3? Ive heard of a company called STS Turbo that offers a remote mounted turbo, but Im not sure that would be such a good idea considering the dirt and water issue in the rear end of a truck. Does anyone have any better options?
All input is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Josh

Re: 5.3L Turbos

I have a 6" fabtech lift, 3" body lift, and 38" Interco Thornbirds. Also an intake, 80mm throttle body, headers and exhaust and a power programmer.
I was wondering about putting a 6.0L instead of the 5.3 but I wasnt sure about the mpg issue.

Re: 5.3L Turbos

For what it's worth....these are both stock engines-

My 6.0 gets about 12 average....14 to maybe 15 highway. Towing more like 10.

My 5.7 (98') gets about 16 to 17 highway but about half that towing.

Also....my two cents....having owned a 5.3 also...I was SUPER disappointed in it. If you have the chance to replace with a 6.0, do it!!! The 6.0 is so much more powerful and much more useful keeping a load going on the highway.

Re: 5.3L Turbos

Thanks Cosmo
I'm pretty sure that I'll be replacing the 5.3 with the 6.0 when the time comes considering that all the parts are swappable. I was just checking to see if there were any other options available for it.
thanks a ton
Josh

Re: 5.3L Turbos

Well Banks has a 6.0 crate engine with twin turbos on it. I think they advertised that it was good for like 1,100 HP on 100+ octane.

Re: 5.3L Turbos

The 5.3L is a good engine, they do have a aluminum block version in the Silverados, 310hp and like 335lbs torque. Its what they had in the SSR and Trailblazer EXT. But I belive they use the LS2 in those now.
How many miles is on it? If its got alot, I'd just go ahead and get a 6.0... The 4.8, 5.3 and 6.0 are all the same block.
Next, I think your problem is gears, what gear ratio is your axles? IT sounds like you need 4.56 gears. But I bet your running stock 3.42s or 3.73's.

Re: 5.3L Turbos

No I run 4.56 in the rear and I need to regear the front..the axle is out right now. Ill be replacing the 5.3L with a 6.0. My current motor has 150,000 miles on it, same with tranny, which will be getting rebuilt with the motor.

Re: 5.3L Turbos

If you have stock 3.42 gears swap in some 4.56's and it will feel like you just put a ton of money in your motor.
