Nerds, I need computer help

Hey guys, we're having a hiccup of sorts with our desktop. It never goes into screensaver or standby mode after sitting idle. There's something running in the background that is keeping it from doing so, however, we haven't been able to find what it is. This has been going on for the last several weeks and can't figure what's been installed to make it wig out.

Also, during game play, there is sporadic kick off back to the desktop and there is a very fast flash of a window, both on the desktop and the task bar. The game is just minimized to the task bar and we just click on it to get back to the game.

We've also been able to catch this mysterious popup flash on the task bar when the computer is sitting idle. But it flashes so fast we cannot read it.

Here's the comp specs:
Intel 875PBZ motherboard w/3.2Ghz processor
4 512 Mb Kingston RAM
NVidia 6600GT video card
Audigy 2ZS Platium soundcard

Here's what we've done to trouble shoot:
Run Spybot and Adaware, that came out clean
Run Norton Antivirus, clean
Checked all running processes and none were cause
Checked stanby and screensaver setting, all were enabled

Anyway, we're at a loss for what this is, any ideas?

Re: Nerds, I need computer help

Do you have any of nvidia's software crapola running in the background? That's really weird that both adAware and Spybot came up clean and yet you've still got that phantom popup... Has it done this since you got/built it? Have you ever reformatted it?

You could try memtest86 to see if you've got any bad spots in your ram. http://www.memtest86.com/#download0

btw, did you build that box? It sounds like a pretty sweet setup.

Your computer has the ability to do this internally....no need to download stuff.....just push the appropriate button to enter the setup menu (F2 or F12 key, forget which) when booting up....if I remember right it gives you the option of running the RAM test then.

Is the window that pops up blue??? If so....best bet is that your hardrive is starting to fail. IF that is so...it may last months but it will finally puke. If not blue....you have spyware of some sort....lay off the porn sites!!! Good luck finding it out if the software won't indentify it.

Another option......MAKE SURE you have done ALL of the Windows updates as they patch holes that are security issues. I once had problems with stuff popping up (not so nice either) and could not get any software to identify it.....decided to catch up on Windows updates and they disappeared the minute I installed all the updates. Worth a try.

Also make sure your antivirus is up to date....if you run Norton you might even try disabling it and see if it makes a difference....Norton make a puter do weird stuff....

I'll keep thinking about it, probably come up with more.....

Re: Nerds, I need computer help

Oh and keep in mind that if you are more than a few Windows updates behind....you may have to run it several times to get them all downloaded and installed. Some updates will only download/install (because they are a prerequisite for other updates) one at a time and will just leave off anything that comes after them so you have to go back and redownload anything that came later....if you aren't paying close attention you may not even realize you did not get all the updates...

For example (old example but still a good one)......Service Pack 2 for XP had to be downloaded and installed before you got many updates that came after SP2....

Also...many updates are not "effective" until your computer has been rebooted.

Re: Nerds, I need computer help

Hey guys, thanks fort he input. My husband built the computer last spring. The Nvidia game card just got installed in March. I guess we started to notice this window after the latest video driver update. The old drivers were cleaned out before the new ones were installed. One of us would sitting playing a game and then boom, the game screen minimized and the desktop came up as if I had pressed ECS or something that would take me immediately from game to desktop.

As for the popup, it's not like a web popup, its more like a program window, kinda like when you run a DOS program. It doesn't stay up long enough to read any text in it or on the task bar. One night we were both standing in the office talking and we both caught the flicker in the task bar. We saw it enough to recognize it as a minimized window of some sorts, but were too far away to read anything.

As for the hard drive, he had that happen on the old computer and he says they're not the same. But he knows The Blue Screen of Death you are talking about

All the Windows updates ar good to go and right now he starting the physical check of the hard drives..er, that CHK DSK...check disk. The comp gets turned off once a week so that it can get a nice bootup and stay up to date.

Keep those options coming, we're at a loss figuring this thing out.

Re: Nerds, I need computer help

I have also noticed that my screen saver will stop coming on sometimes.....it tends to happen when the computer has been running for a long time w/o rebooting. I have noticed several computers that have this problem. I don't know if some programs tend to "hibernate" or shut down after a long period of inactivity or what....

I shut mine down every night to keep her good and updated and fresh....a fresh boot solves alot of weird computer tendencies.

Do you have specific tasks scheduled? Might be coming on due to this....

Re: Nerds, I need computer help

I read something or other about a version of nvidia's drivers being more unstable than normal. I wonder if that isn't part of your problem. I can't find where I read it now, but it was some gamer site. I guess the newest version is 71.89. Is that the one you have?

Re: Nerds, I need computer help

Okay, hmmm. Maybe this version has issues for you. Did the problems exist before updating hte drivers? Have you tried removing the current driver and rolling back to the previous one. It may take some digging on nVidia's site, but the previous versions should be available.

EDIT: I just remember that back before ATI had their Catalyst Drivers, some of the versions were buggy. I used to have ot roll back a version every now and then to keep my machine stable.

Re: Nerds, I need computer help

Best way, download Hijack This! unzip to your desktop. Run "Do a system scan and save a logfile", upload the logfile here (It will be written on your desktop). I do this all the time for a living as a consultant, and happy to help out out my 4x4 brethren (Found this post by checking who's online ) anyway, PM me if you don't here from me as I am usually on SWB. But It seems you have some good geeks here to help (Of which I am one ) that can help decifer the logfile. Don't remove anything with Hijack This (Click the checkbox)though, it can really take out your system if used by the dark side
