Front Axle Question 90 Chevy 1/2 ton

Just put a half shaft in my truck a couple of weeks ago. Thought when I did it that the passanger side axle wasn't setting right in the axle tube. Looked at it again today and tore it part way down. It seems like the flange on the axle should be almost touching the axle housing, but it's not. I can move the axle in and out at least two to three or more inches. When I try to put it all the way back in I can still see polished axle shaft. What am I missing? Any idea of what might be wrong? I started checking all this because a couple of days ago it wouldn't go into 4 wheel drive, The shift lever moved to no light or axle lock up. I'm getiing 12 volts to the actuator and the actuator has continuity through it.

Thanks for any and all help...
