I have a 96 Z71 and I am trying to find out what is involved in replacing the gaskets on the oil filter adapter. My understanding is there is a gasket and an o-ring. Is that correct? Also, to remove the lines from the adapter, do you have to have the special tool or can it be done without it. If you have to have the tool, where can I get one? Would a place like Autozone rent it?

I got a quote from a shop to do the work and they wanted $120 to do it. I hope to do it myself and save some money.

I'm assuming you mean the quick connect lines? Find out which one it is, then go down to the dealer [yes it is a dealer only part]. Get the correct screw in piece that goes into the oil filter housing, then buy a new plastic 'clamp' for lack of better wording. Grab a pair of channel locks, grip both tabs of the one currently on, then pull back at the same time. Yes it is a bit of a bitch and may take a couple of tries, but it does work. the screw in connector is about $12 or so, and the 'clamp' is around $2-$3 [mind you prices may vary from dealer to dealer]. It should only take you no more than 30 min. I did mine in about 20 min. in 14" of snow a couple of months ago.
