steering hose question

I have a 1990 K2500 4x4 and the power steering return line is leaking. looks like it may have rusted through but I am not sure. I noticed that the line winds its way through the frame rail. I was wondering if anyone knows why it does this as I was thinking about replacing the hose with one that does not do that. Just a line that goes from the reservor to the pump like the out/high pressure line does.
Is there some reason why I should not do this?
Thanks
Kdog

Re: steering hose question

I can't really picture the line you mean right now, but if all it does is go through the frame and come right back out, and it's NOT through the frame to avoid being hit by a moving part, just replace it without putting it through the frame. If you found a better route, go for it.
