how do I unload my torsion bars

I am lifting my 98 chevy z-71 with a 6" FabTech kit. I am familiar with most of the front end but have never unloaded torsion bars before. It says that I have to use a torsion bar unloading tool....Is there a tip or trick to this procedure so I can get away without going out and buying this specialty tool?

Not to hype on another BBS but here's a link to some good info on torsion bars. It includes unloading them.

you can use the loan a toolprogram at autozone and do it that wau, or you can use a modified C-clamp. it is arguably dangerous to do so, but everyone that has dopne it on this board hasnt had any problems.

The fullsizechevy pictures are great! In my case I used a jack
with a punch standing on top. After unloading most of the toque
by jacking the front end of the truck up with the tire off the ground, and removing the t-bar adjuster bolts, I positioned the punch to stick in the dimple (red arrow shown
on fullsizechevy pictures) in the key. about 2-3 pumps on the jack
and the key rotates enough to allow you to push/pull
the adjuster cross nut out (don't use your fingers!) with
a stick/ratchet... Then let the jack down. The t-bars slide right out.

I just pull the adjuster bolts all the way out then drive them out, acutlay I did it like that somehow thinkI unbolted the t-bar crossmeber to relive the pressure from themonly lifted the cross member a few inches. then I drove them out after the adjuster deal and everything was removed.

going in took alittle phines but worked about the same.

Thanks for all the info guys... I now have my lift in and am waiting for an alignment. I used the modified c-clamp for the first side (it broke soon after I re-installed the adjuster block) and a bottle jack. thanks again for all the help. I'll have pics as soon as I get the film developed.
