transfer case grinding

98 Z 71 1/2 ton auto with manual t case.Going from 2h to 4h the gears were grinding,even with tranny in neutral.Whats up?

could be shift fork issue, but likely the mode synchronizer. my 96 had same symptoms and it turned out the be the mode synch. pretty much just a big ol hollow hear in there.

The shift fork I'm familiar with,what is the mode sync and how would you trouble shoot it??

dont know, that one was under warranty so i limped it over to the garage and they pulled it apart and replaced it. that was like 2 years ago but i think i might still have the part at home. will be there friday. I"ll snap a picture if i can find it.

Mine grinds from neutral to 2H all the time. Should I be concerned. All other shifts are fine. Just the neutral to 2H

According to the manual if you shift from 4l to 2h,put the truck in neutral and shift through neutral in the transfer case in one motion.If you stop in neutral before shifting through it will grind.
