Z71?

I am looking at a 90 Chevy Half Ton for a better daily driver for myself, it is a very clean truck with the add ons of dual exhuast and rims from a 99-01 style Suburban. The only thing that throws me are the Z71 stickers. If memory serves me correctly the Z71s didnt come under 94 or so, somewhere when the Vortec 350s started comeing out. Am I totally off base or some what correct. I just would like to know so if the salesmen trys to sell me on the fact it is a Z71, I dont wish to sound like a dumbass when I tell him it really isnt. Thanks in advance.

Re: Z71?

My old mans GMC K1500 is a z71. So they do exist. Look for the RPO code in the glove box. I do beleive its z71... but I could be wrong.

Re: Z71?

the Z71 package didn't come out intil 90, i think. the Z71 stickers, however, didn't come out for another year. So, some early trucks just have the 4x4 sticker, but came from the factory with the Z71 package. it was a marketing move to put the Z71 stickers on the trucks and it paid off huge.

all in all, check your RPOs in the trucks you look at.

Re: Z71?

I'm not sure about codes but I have a 90 and it has the "offroad" package with skid plates, etc.The guy I bought the truck from had the window sticker and the catalog used when he bought the truck. Mine is not a Z71 but has everything down to the Bilsteins. I know someone who has the same exact truck but it is a 91 and it is a Z71 (bought it new in 91), his window sticker is almost the same as mine. I would be cautious about a 90 Z71, it may have the stickers and the seller may not know any different. Good luck though. In 90 the Z71/offroad/4x4 packages had skid plates, gov lock, higher output alts, and larger gas tanks(long bed models). Good luck

Re: Z71?

Other features were 3.73's, reciever, and a V8. With that TBI V8 you probaly won't get much better MPG. You said that you were looking for a daily driver. I can't imagine that this truck will be much better than you truck.

Re: Z71?

1990 was the first year with 1991 with the stickers. Look at the RPOs in the glovebox. 1990 was also the first year of composite headlights and the nice bench seat with armrest.

Back then I'm pretty sure all it included was cranked torsion bars, skid plates, 3.73 gears, and an ATF cooler.

The Z71 package was supposed to be an iteration of the Sport package back in the SFA. Back then it included buckets, 31x10.50 rubber, skid plate, ATF cooler, and heavy front springs with the 1.25" diameter sway bar.
