140 amp alternator upgrade/problem/??

Okay, it's been a while, but you guys helped me before. I have a '96 Chevy 5.7liter. I upgraded from the factory 105 amp, to a 140 amp alternator. The problem I have now is that the brown wire/flat connector at the left rear of the alternator is different than what I have. I have a 1-wire connection with rounded corners. The new alternator has a 1-wire also, but the connector is rectangular. Does anyone know if the brown wire is just to the guage in the cab, and can I cut/splice in a rectangular connector and be okay? I have to figure someone has done this already. The stealership has no idea if it will work or not.
HELP!!

Re: 140 amp alternator upgrade/problem/?? Try this

Check out the adapters at the bottom of the page on this link: http://www.alternatorparts.com/cs130...uv_upgrade.htm

I just upgraded from the 105 to 140 on my '95 Hoe, but this alternator supplier sent me one with the pre-installed (proper) connector so I didn't have to mess with the adapter. But the adapter should help you so you don't have to go cutting wires. Good luck.

Thanks for the link, Like a Rock.

And congrats on the meangreen, Yukon97.

I used a new factory harness. Too many wires, but a little "snip, snip" and it's all good. It's amazing how much brighter the lights are with a good alternator.

daveZ71,

Do you like your MT/R's? I am considering these tires as my next pair.

Re: 140 amp alternator upgrade/problem/??

ok this really doesnt' have to do with your problem but it does have to do with this topic. Im having some alt problems of my own. i just upgraded to a 140 Amp alt and now at idle, especially in gear(idle is lower around 400-500rpm) my volts drop way down below 14 close to the red, and my ligths start dimming. When i give it gas and put it up around 1000 rpm its fine. Is something wrong with the alt or something else on my truck?

Re: 140 amp alternator upgrade/problem/??

my truck idles at 400, but if its going in the red, it might be the alt.... turn your key to the run position and see where the battery indicator is. it will probably be around 11. With the truck on, the truck should be at 13-14, so it would lead me to believe that below that your alt is shot.
