1986 454 th400 hd torque converter failure,

Usually spend most of my time on the Jeepster board but my "Jeepster puller" had a problem on a trip and I need some Chevy advice if possible. Had to have the torque converter on my motorhome replaced.1986 454 th400hd trans, 82,000mi. It started with a vibration that slowly got worse then all the fluid was dumped on the road and under carriage.(Much smoke no fire) My questions, is this a common problem for this age /combo, what are the prospects for the future, what might be the longevity of the 454. I do like to keep "old Iron" on the road but not sure what is old enough. Any info or opinions appreciated, thanks

Re: 1986 454 th400 hd torque converter failure,

well i cant imagine dumpign all ofp the fluid on the road is a very common problem...i mean if it were that common i doubt they would haev made any of them. as for the 454...good big block engine. they do run a bit hot and they have abeen known o eat a few cam shafts here and there since the oiling system for them is a bit sub-par, but the 44 is a very decent engine.
you might be better off makign a post similar to this on the chevy SFA forum. those guys all have solid front axles which were used in GM trucks prior to 1988. so they'd be a bit better at diagnosing for that transmission. not too many of the guys over here haev those.
good luck to you, and i hope you figure it all out

thanks for the reply. Sort of had an idea that it didn't happen every day, just checking to see what others had experienced with same set up.thanks

Re: 1986 454 th400 hd torque converter failure,

Can't say that I have any info about your tranny, sorry. But about the big block eating camshafts...it's been said in more than one place that drilling a .060" hole in the aftmost lifter valley oil plug can prevent the motor from chewing the cam to shreds. Good luck with your tranny fix.
