Bad bearing in the front axle tube 97 Suburban 4x4
I had a pretty bad vibration at hiway speed in our 97 Suburban. I brought it to a front end place and the criminals tried to sell me all new steering parts. I tore it down last night (I could hear a rumble in the right front and suspected either bearing or CV joints). When I got it apart, there is definitely a bad outer bearing in the passenger side axle tube. (The tube that bolts to the differential). I've got the axle tube off now.
Here is the question - does anyone know how easy/hard it is to replace that bearing? It looks like the inside gear is pressed onto the axle - and that end is free floating. Is it as simple as pressing the gear off, sliding out the axle and pressing a new bearing into the outer axle tube?
Oh by the way - the ball joints and steering arms have no play in them...the front end place wanted to charge me 1000 bucks to replace the balls, pittman and idler arms. That's a lot of beer...and it'd still be broken. Thanks for any help!
