Radio/Heater Display goes off with Headlights On
My '92 Chevy K1500 has an issue with the dash instrumentation, specificically the radio, the tape player/EQ display, and heater/fan display. They all go off as soon as I turn the headlights on. The displays work fine if the headlights are off. I suspected the dimmer switch, so I bought another used one from a salvage yard. It worked for about 2 seconds then started smoldering and quit.... So, my question is, is this a common problem and is it really the dimmer switch? Is the part a dealer-only item or can I get this at a parts store like Napa or Schuck's? I took the old dimmer switch apart and there is a very thin white ceramic board the thickness of a credit card that was busted all the way through. I'm sure this would at least contribute to the problem if current can't get across the circuits. Worst case scenario, anyone ever try soldering the board?
