Looking for info and opinions...

I'm looking for an engine and transmission to swap into my 1975 Chevy 1/2 ton 2wd truck. What I'd like to have is a 350 engine coupled to a 4l80e transmission. First of all, where would I find such a combination? I also want to stay away from TBI and either have a TPI or Vortec motor in the truck. I assume I need to be looking at 3/4 ton and 1 ton vehicles, but what years would have the TPI or Vortec engines? And, is there a better choice, TPI or Vortec?

Thanks!

Re: Looking for info and opinions...

As far as I know there was not a truck that GM produced with TPI, 87'-95' were all TBI and the came vortec. If you are gonna swap there have been a couple of discussions on the SFA board about vortec swaps. As far as the tranny engine combo goes a lot of 3/4t trucks came with the 350/4l80E combo. Just a question, but why do you not want TBI?

Mainly I'm trying to stay away from TBI because of personal preference. I'm sure they're decent systems, I'm just not crazy about them. I like the idea of 1 injector per cylinder for a lot of little reasons. I suppose it's mostly mileage and power, but they also make more sense to me since they spray fuel close to the valve rather than spraying fuel and air through the entire intake manifold.

I'm not positive, but i think the TBI swap is a lot easier due to the computer controls on it. I think the vortec computer system is a lot more complicated.....

Just something to think about
