Valve question

I think the valves on my 89 350 are out of adjustment. They are so mal-adjusted, I can't get the thing started. How can I adjust my valves without the engine running? I tightened/lossened a few valves a got the engine running decently, it would backfire a bit and it stalled out when it was put in gear. I hear 2 loud, sharp pops...could I have bent a push rod? Does that explain why she won't run now?

Thanks,

Tim Moore

<font color=green>Yikes, now that is a misadjusted valve. I don't see how they could be so out of adjustment that it won't even start, unless all of the valves were tightened until they wouldn't get any tighter. You can adjust them when it's not running, you just follow the firing order around the engine as you turn it by hand, adjusting the valves when they are closed. Loosen them up until they are definately closed all the way, then tighten until the rocker touches the valve. another 1/4 turn or so and lock it down. Once you get it started then readjust them while it's running..
