digital odometer/engine hour meter POS!!

Couldn't find this discussed anywhere on the IFS forum already:

Anyone ever have to test/replace the new digital odometer/engine hour meter display that came out with the '99's?

Mine's been acting up for probably a year. I've let it slide because it still seems to be recording the ever-valuable (and legal) information. It's just a display problem I think. At first, it just wouldn't come on when I started, but a quick jiggle of the trip meter reset button there would wake it up. Now, if the planets are in proper alignment, and I treat her real nice, she'll let me have a peek up her dress at her goodies.

At these very infrequent times I see it on, it looks like it's still keeping track of the miles just fine. Gotta be just the display, right? Anyone

Anyone ever poke around in there? I haven't torn my dash apart yet, but my book only goes so far as to explain how to disconnect the single huge connector that supplies signals to everything on the dash panel. Anyone know which pins on that connector provide my signal? Is the display a simple a plug-n-play replacement, or will soldering be involved? It's not integrated into the dash is it? Most important, gotta go to my favorite place, the dealership, and buy one. What's the cost of one??

Re: digital odometer/engine hour meter POS!!

Unfortunately, the hours and odometer reading are kept in the guage panel, not the computer, and it is integrated into the dash. I've put a Caddy Escalade panel in my Avalanche. Ordered from Trader's. I had them program the mileage into the thing. They can't program the hours. Cost me $400. The standard Chevy panel should be quite a bit cheaper. I don't know how to program the mileage into it. Good luck.

So the instrument panel itself has a memory chip or something?

Gotta replace the whole dang thing then??

The new Avalanche still uses the same dash? Close enough I assume?

Thanks for the advice. Just want to bump this to the top one more time in case anyone else missed it, then I'll let it die.

I figured more people out there would have this same problem. Like, you ever notice how there's a 50/50 chance every Silverado/Sierra you see on the road will have a DRL out, but there's a 98% chance it'll be the left one? Happened to me too. GREMLINS!!

Yes, you have to replace the whole damn thing. Kind of cheesy. Same dash panel as the Escalade, but the Escalade has a tranny temperature guage and looks a bit more custom. The Escalade panel will fit in any full size GM from '99-on (new body style). The single connector to hook it all up. Takes about 15 minutes to replace the panel.
