I was just wondering if any of you guys had to replace your 4.3 crankshafts or bearings. My 92 jimmy started making a tapping sound from the lower end, so not wanting to tear it apart yet, I took it to the g.m. dealer, and they said it was the #1 bearing.Upon my inspection they all were bad, and the crank shaft journals were scored beyond resurfacing.I'm in the process of replacing it now. Is this a common problem? Is there anything else I should replace when I do the crank kit? I'm putting a high vol. oil pump, ad a new timing chain too. Its got 102,000 miles. Thanks

Re: crankshaft?

Is it an automatic tranny or manual ? If it is manual now would be a good time to look at the clutch, and related components. Just a word of that high volume oil pump. I know of a guy that put on a V-8 and didnt change the oil pan. The result was whenever he nailed it, he would loose oil pressure. The pump was sucking the oil pan dry. I dont know if this would be a problem on a 4.3 or not, but it is worth watching it for a while.

Re: crankshaft?

Its an automatic.I hope I dont have any trouble with the pump. Ive read that it doesn't really make too much of a difference with the h/v oil pump on a stock motor because of the size of the oil tube(or whatever you call the openings), except for being more durable. thanks
