1988 S10 4x4.... just got it today, need some info

What can you guys tell me about this truck? Its got an overdrive in it. Also, when are you supposed to shift into 4Lo? in neutral? i tried it and it grinded some, same with shifting out of 4Lo, but 2hi-4hi and vice versa is great shifting. Thanks!

Hello! Let me be the first to welcome you to the FABULOUS world of S10s! The grinding is normal, the way I do it is try to put it in park or neutral and go from 2hi to 4lo in one fluid motion skipping the N position. Or you can just shut the engine off and shift into 4LO, then start up again. The S10 4x4s are great economical but still powerful trucks and SUVs. If you're lucky enough to get the 4.3L engine, 200K miles before a rebuild is very possible. The 700R-4 auto is the same used in the fullsize trucks and can be excellent with a trans cooler and a mild shift-kit. Good luck with it.

Let me also welcome you to the Chevy ranks!

Is this your first 4x4? By the way you worded your question it sounds like it is... Keep your eyes open on this board; you'll learn alot! And don't be afraid to ask any questions!

Nope, this isnt my first 4x4,

I got an 80 chev 4x4 with 6" lift and 35's, and an 83 K5 blazer

but this is my first fuel injected 4x4, and my first 1/4 ton 4x4

Actually your S truck is not necessarily a 1/4 ton truck... According to my glovebox sticker (1985 truck), it's rated at 1/2 ton... or some such thing... Interesting thought though...
