Don't know exactly what your 88 2.8 makes but my 86 Jeep XJ Cherokee's carbed 2.8 is rated at 115 HP @ 4800RPM and 145ft.lb.torque @ 2400RPM. Your fi 88 2.8 probably does a little better.

If you're concerned about horsepower , then you should have got the 4.3. I have a 2.8 and i find it to be very capable, both on and off road, and it seems work better the harder I push it, although it sucks going up hills on the highway. However, congratulations on your new truck, I'm sure you'll realize soon that the 2.8 is a great motor if you take care of it, and it won't kill you at the pumps. good luck.

My 85 s10 has a 2.8 in it and i got 580,000 miles out of it before it blew. if you take care of it it can be a very dependable engine.

85 chevy s10 4x4 2.8l v6 4bl
538,862 miles and counting
