front diff.

OK quick question, I am leaking fluid from my front diff on the driver side output side to the axle shaft. What should I do or what would cause this. Could it be easy to fix or diagnose. Thanks

Re: front diff.

If I am understanding you right yes it easy to diagnose but not easy to fix. It is probably the seal in the output shaft tube. Putting in a new seal is quite a task the best I remember. I thought I was going to have to put one in for someone but after I read how big a job it was we decided oil was pretty cheap. If the leak wasnt real bad I would just keep an eye on it and check the fluid to see how much I was actually loosing. A little oil leak will look like a lot after some time leaking. If it is leaking bad enough till you think you should replace it, I would recommend you get yourself a repair manual and read to see if you want to tackle it or have it fixed. Good luck.

Re: front diff.

Thanks for the help but I think I got it fixed. Apparently while on the trail the output shaft released from the diff. While I was searching for the leak I noticed it was not attached fully. With a little help from the wife turning the wheel I was able to get it back together. ???Do we have full-floating axels up front or c-clip????

Re: front diff.

I think the axles have a retainer ring on them like in a front wheel drive. You can just pry them out with a crowbar or screwdriver and slide them back in till it locks. If yours came loose the retainer ring could have broken or something. I never heard of one just coming out, but maybe someone else will post and has. Anyway after looking at my book on this the seal shouldnt be as hard as I originally told you. Good luck.

Re: front diff.

Yeah that makes sense. I should still take it apart and make sure nothing is wrong with the insides. Thanks for the help.
