off-road shops confused me...

OK, so I went to 2 of my local off-road shops this weekend. They told me that my '97 Jimmy could not fit 31x10.5's with a 2" body lift, 1.5 inch torsion cranks, and 1.5" AAL. I might be wrong, but I thought that I could fit 31's with just the TB crank and AAL. They said that I need new wheels with 3" backspacing (because the backside of the wider tire would rub on a suspension arm, eventually blowing a tire), and to combine the 2" body lift with another 1" body lift to fit the tires, along with the TB crank. Can anyone shed some light on this? I need to get to the bottom of it. What is required to fit 31's without any rubbing? I am on a budget, so new wheels are out of the question. Thanks for the help, guys.
PS - What is the maximum length of wheel spacers that are safe to use? (They told me 5/8" was the max with the factory lug 'bolts')

Re: off-road shops confused me...

NO NO NO..... wheels with 3 inches of B/S would rub like crazy, the factory B/S is nearly 6 inches, also 31's will be just fine with a 2 inch body lift and a t-bar tweak. I have only a 2 inch body lift and mince rub so minimally I cant hear or feel it. If i werent so lazy I could tweak my t-bars a bit and there would be no rubbing at all. My blazer is a 2 door, but that shouldnt make any difference at all. Here is a pic of it.

Re: off-road shops confused me...

There is an off road shop here in Erie that told me "no way you can fit 30x9.5x15's on that truck without a lift" I asked about a t-bar crank, "nope!" Well after reading the threads here and asking a question, there are a LOT of people who say otherwise, I'll go with the majority who arent trying to sell me a lift kit.

Not only do we say otherwise, most of the time we can show you pitrues to prove it.

Re: off-road shops confused me...

That is what I thought, it just struck me as peculiar that these guys do this sort of thing all the time, and were so sure of themselves. I have been working with one of the 2 shops for 2 years, and I trust the owner (guess he does not know it all). I pleaded my case with them, citing this forum, and they still held their ground. Dunno. I want to stay away from body lifts ($$$) so I guess for a final time, can I fit 31x10.5 on stock rims with the 1.5"TB crank and 1.5"AAL on a 1997 Jimmy? I appreciate the help, pardon my reduntant questions, I just really really want to be sure! Thanks.

Re: off-road shops confused me...

Probably not, you could fit 30's with a 1.5 inch t-bar/AAL lift, but most likely not 31's.

Re: off-road shops confused me...

I have a 94 with the new body style. 30's will fit with ease, right now i have 31's though with 2 inch body torsion bar and shackles/add-leafs. O and wheel spacers. The tires do rub at full lock though if you dont' have wheel spacers. I have 1.5 on the front and 2 on the back.

Re: off-road shops confused me...

BigMileage, what brand of body lift do you have?. Also, do the 1.5" wheel spacers cause any harm to the vehicle? Do you have new lug "bolts" (the threads)or not? Thanks for the help. PS - Nice truck!

Re: off-road shops confused me...

I think that some shops are just a little confused about what will fit on a S-10 and what wont. My 94' has 30x9.50x15 with no rubbing and I could fit 31's with a
little t-bar tweaking.
