Re: No fifth gear

I Had the same problem with my 85 S-10 Come to find out it was only a 4 speed in the first place...

it was a joke I thought it was funny!

Really though check the fluid in your cluch resovoir cause if it gets low it wont let it get in to the higher gears....

Re: No fifth gear

I also had that problem once , reverse was fine, however, 5th gear only engaged sometimes, and that was after repeated attempts .

What I did was to torque the torx bolt on the outside of the transmission (the only one) to the specification (I can get it if it is not in your book). That bolt adjusts the 5th gear/reverse rail.

Now 5th gear doesn't miss a beat . Hope this helps. Good Luck!

Re: No fifth gear

Yeah, the 85's clutch slave cylinders are Notorious for leaking and most Parts Stores sell rebuild kits for them. Check your clutch reservoir and check it often. 90% of the time they'll leak inside the bellhousing, so you won't see the drip.

Re: No fifth gear

Problem solved.

fifth gear is splined to the main shaft and held on with a circlip, after I pulled the transfer case it was very obvious that the gear was not where it was supose to be. Pulled the extention housing realigned the gear and reinstalled the circlip.

This was a replacement tranny a year ago, the only thing I can think of that would cause it is that the clip was not installed properly in the first place and just took this long to fail. Fortunatly there was no damage(thank god).
