clunk noise??????

Hey guys,
i've got a stranger noise. As you all know the Philadelphia Area has had a bit of snow this year and my town doesn't plow very well. I've had to lock in the front end several times. On a few occasions i have parked the truck (1996 gmc jimmy, push button 4x4) and left it in 4x4 high. When i return to her and start her up i hear a low level front end "clunk".This happens in "park" with the parking brake set. The truck systems function normally and the truck still drives well in all gears and 4x4 modes. Does anybody have any idea if this is a problem or is this normal operation. This is my first non-manual operated transfer case. Please set my mind at ease or get me to the shop.

p.s. this is the best and most informed gaggle of gear heads i have ever listened too. this is a complement!!

Re: clunk noise??????

It happened to me also. I corrected the problem by not leaving the truck on 4x4 when parked. Correct me if I'm wrong guys but I think this is because the 4x4 switch activates a vaccum which is not operating when the truck is off, so when you start it again, it engages suddenly. Don't worry about it too mutch though, if this is the case, it's no problem. Personnaly I prefer leaving it on 2 wheel for parking and changing for 4By after starting the truck. That way you don't get a strange sound "while" starting the truck. My bit.

Thats exactly what I was going to suggest it was, I would say you have nothing to worry about.

Hey Guys,

Thanx for your help. Your both gentlemen and scholars. I had an idea it was vacuum related.
