engine swap

Can anyone tell me if a 3.8L 229 ci engine out of a rear wheel drive GM car will go into my s-10 without having to change much, like people have said with the 3.4L. It is four wheel drive if that has anything to do with it. Any info would be helpful, thanks.

Re: engine swap

I looked in an old chiltons manual and the 229 v6 chevy has the same bore & stroke as a 305 v8. In the engine section it says the 229 is a cut down small block v8. I think that you would need the trans from a 4.3 or v8, since the 2.8/3.1/3.4 is a different bolt pattern. Its not a bolt in, but anything is possible if you really want to do it.

Re: engine swap

Putting a 3.8 would be the same as putting in a 4.3- ud have to change motor mounts the transmission , exhaust and other related stuff

Re: engine swap

YUP! There both Chevy 90 degree V-6's. The 4.3 is a 350 with the last 2 cylinders cut off, the 3.8 is a 305 with the last 2 cut off. The 2.8/3.1/3.4 are all 60 degree v-6's.
