Steering column

Does anybody know what wears out in the steering column that makes the column have freeplay? The free play is where the tilt will move up and down. The freeplay is getting worse!!!

Re: Steering column

further down the column there is a coupling for the tilt,it has some 6 point reverse torx bolts that come loose. They are a major pain to get at.

Re: Steering column

And you should get to them as soon as you can, as they also should have some bearings back there that will wear out and only cause you more hassle.

Just adding my $0.0000000002

Re: Steering column

Sorry for the O/T here but:

What exactly is $0.0000000002 worth anyhow, maybe 4 copper molecules and maybe 3 zinc molecules?

But anyhow in the GM van I sometimes drive it had that problem (has tilt wheel), took it to a shop, I don't remember them charging a horrible amount considering how much of a pain in the backside it would have been for me to have to do that... Whether you take it somewhere or whether you do it yourself I'd recommend to put a dab (technical term) of blue Loc-Tite on the fasteners to help make sure you don't have to do the project again at some point in the future. Might as well since it's not something you should ever (or at least maybe once every 100 years) have to take apart...

Re: Steering column

Good point, Tim...

That $0.00000002 is the amount after taxes for a $0.02 opinion...
All as bonus income, of course...
