I need help with my wipermotor

My wiper motor quit working all of a sudden. I checked the fuse its good. What I did find is that the housing is "energized" if I ground the housing the motor works. I dont want to permantly ground the housing because I am afraid it might damage someting. What could be causing this? Can I ground the housing without burning something up? A new motor is $50 and I havnt had a chance to check the junk yards. The weird thing is that it works if I ground the housing. Can someone help me on this one? By the way its not a delay model.

Re: I need help with my wipermotor

It sounds like its the switch. Have you had the "phantom wipers" previously
discussed here? If so, then I sugggest replacing the switch. I have a similar problem and replaced the motor with a good used one and it still acts the same. I haven't replaced the switch though. This seems to be a common problem on these trucks inter. wipers or not.

Re: I need help with my wipermotor

I wonder if I lost the ground. Today I'm going to try and ground the "ground" wire and see if that works. How could I check and see if it is the switch? What is weird is ... if I run a jumper from the firewall to the housing of the wiper motor it works. If I check the ground wire for continuity with it unplugged its open. When I plug in the wires the ground is hot. This is telling me that the motor is either shorted to ground or the power is back feeding because of a lack of ground. If the motor was shorted internaly I would think that it would pop the fuse when I grounded the housing.

Re: I need help with my wipermotor

Your wiper housing is suppose to be grounded. I checked both of my trucks and they were both grounded, and the wiring schematics show that also.
Hope this helps.

Re: I need help with my wipermotor

Well....I went to the junk yard and the guy let me try a used motor in the lot and it worked the same as mine. So what I did was just run a jummper wire from the fire wall to the housing and so far it has been working great with no other problems.

Re: I need help with my wipermotor

Soooo this can be attributed to "bad ground"?

Re: I need help with my wipermotor

not nessasaraly. The wiring harness "ground" when jumped to ground shorts and makes the fuse pop. But if I "ground" the housing to the firewall it works. This would indicate to me that some place I am getting a back feed of power back through the ground, which would normally indicate a bad motor. However a known good motor acts the same way. Some others have sugested a bad switch but I havnt torn the collum apart to check it yet.
