sparatic windshield wipers on 88 blazer

my 88 S-10 Blazer 4x4 has posessed windshield wipers that go off randomly, but more often when i turn on the signals. its not every time, but just whenever it feels like it. they often stick in the full upright position until i turn them off and on real fast. ANY ADVICE?

Hey Jason, I believe the problem would be in your turn signal swich. It will have to be replaced,
though I don't know how to replace one I bet its going to be a all day gob.Good luck!

Re: sparatic windshield wipers on 88 blazer

Finally someone who shares my pain. I have the sparatic windshield wipers occasionally on my Blazer, but on my S10 the wipers only work on high, and when you turn them off, they stop anywhere on the windshield. I replaced the w/w motor, to no avail, so its the switch. BTW the S10 has 2 speed wipers, the Blazer has intermittent. I may just swap the whole column in my S10 for a tilt one while I'm at it. Should be easy to remove the switch after you get the wheel off. Good luck.

Hey buddy, I have the exact same problem!!! They just go off whenever they want. I am not going to worry about getting it fixed though. I rather deal with it and save some money.

Re: sparatic windshield wipers on 88 blazer

This is a famous problem! also known as Phantom wipers!
You have to replace the circular wiper switch, inside the column at the end of the turn signal lever, I know this for a fact!
Here is the BAD news it is a dealer only part! part number 26020404 this was for a 87 jimmy with intermittent wipers, tilt column, and Cruise control.
Now the SHOCKER $60.44
But it may be available at regular parts stores by now, since they ALL seem to do this eventually. Let us know if you find one from somewhere other than the dealer! I will check around also!

I checked with Checker and they have it also!
Same AC Delco part number 26020404 $41.99!

Autozone has the same part, but it is made by "Wells" part number SW946 and it is $29.99

Re: sparatic windshield wipers on 88 blazer

Diesel22, it happens to ALL 85 to 89 S series, it's just a matter of when
The good news is that the part IS available at regular autoparts stores The first time I did one, it was dealer only
I have blown off doing it on the Jimmy we have, but now the tilt is so loose I have to fix it also, so I may as well fix both problems at once.
PS. sometimes they also refer to it as a "multifunction switch"

how much of an ordeal is it to do this by yourself? if you have done it, do the parts come with instructions?
