94'cruise and trans problem

First the cruise started working on and off. Like a surge and then it stopped all together. and i can't get anyone too look at it. They say they hate it that much. And the trans is the 4l60e and seems too work pretty good but every now and then i'll be on the road somewhere and i'll hear a faint sound sort of like an old 4 speed or air leaking. As i slow down it gets really loud and changes too that of gears grinding and then at about 5 miles an hour it lets out a clunk and stops. I have too come too a complete stop and start again and it will do the same thing. If I stop put it in park and then drive it won't do it. Just in overdrive. It sounds like a plane is landing on the truck!!! It also will stop doing it the next day and i think I went for a few months without aything happening until lately.
