weird problems, please help

I am having two very weird problems with my S10. Its a 1989 4x4 S10 with the taho package and its a 4.3 standerd cab and an automatic with O/D. Any way the 1st problem is very hard to describe but here goes.
1. One day this just started happening after a good day of offroading. When you are driving and you manually put the truck in say 1st or 2nd gear, (it is an automatic) it wont catch to slow you down. So say I stop, put the shifter into 1st and go, it will go as far as you keep giving it gas, the moment you let off the gas the engine goes to an idle instead of stick ing to the gear, there for it wont slow me down, it wont cathc intill you give it enough gas to rpm the motor back up to where ever it would be to meet the trucks speed in that gear. Its mainly bad cause it wont hold me going down hills and stuff anymore, it does this in all gears, I dont think it does in O/D though, Cant really tell since its such a weak high speed gear. Hopefully I explined that well. The truck shifts great, really strong upward shift, just wont catch on the down shifts. So what do you think and what can i do or check.
2. The seconf problem is this, lately I have noticed a bad hesitation when I floor it. If you stop and gas it real hard it bogs down and then all the sudden just boosts into the normal 4.3 power I know, does it any time you give it alot of gas, Ive also noticed when at idle for a long time it seems to be building up, it will start ideling funny and smelling like gas. Well let me know
Thanks so much to al that can help, just really bugging me, Later guys Brad

well i have 4 s-10's and what it sound's like to me is you either have a hole in or the line from the motor to the trans has become disconnected. there is a vacume line that runs to the trans that will tell it whaen to shift and if you do have that it wont give it the hold back that it needs it also makes a vacume leak with makes the motor run bad. good luck
