86 GMC 2.5 Timing

I'm trying to time my S15 2.5. If I time it using my timing light to the factory specification, 8 deg BTC, it hesitates from idle. If I time it to run well the timing mark is of the scale. The emissions sticker says to ground the diagnostic connection and with the timing equipment connected set the average timing for #1 and #4 cylinder. I've always been told that if you start the engine with the diagnostic connection grounded it could cause sever damage to the computer. Is there some special timing equipment used other than a timing light? What is the correct way to time this engine?http://bbs.off-road.com/ubbthreads/i...s/confused.gif
