damn friggin pinion flange bolt! any tricks?

i gotta remove my flange to replace the pinion seal and i can't get the damn bolt off!!! i've tried a breaker-sized socket wrench but no help. i don't want to jerk on it too hard im afraid of damaging something. i tried blocking the wheels but that doesn't help much. the only thing i can think of would be to jam a crowbar in the lugnuts. however, last time i did that i ended up buying 2 new knuckle assemblies due to mangled lugs. im a scared little mechanic that wants to go camping and all i have left to do is the pinion seal. please help homeys

ummmmmm. i got the flange bolt off but i forgot to mark where it was on the pinion. can you recommend how far i should torque it down? or will i have to get a measurer and measure the preload?

I don't think there is any way to "crush" the collar any more than when it was intially assembled, but I think if you over-tighten you wear out the pinion bearing.

I'd tighten it down to "where you thought it was", and take a test drive. Listen for the "clunk" when you let off the gas. If you hear it, tighten the nut down 1/2 turn more till the "clunk" goes away.

Might have ta to to it a couple times.

Or, pop the diff cover, tighten the pinion nut to "where you thought it was", put some white grease on the ring gear and rotate the wheels to see if the pattern the white grease makes on the ring gear is "centered".

Either way it's touchy-feely without a depth gauge.
