Bad start. Need help!

My 1995 has had problems starting. Whenever the car has been off for more than about 30 mins it has a terrible time starting. It always does start but it takes awhile. It cranks over about 4-6 times before it actually starts and you can smell alot of gas in the air around the engine, but not from the exhaust. I tried power flushing the fuel injectors with no success. It seems like maybe the fuel line is draining out back into the tank when I turn it off. My auto shop teacher told me you cannot buy that valve by itself and that I would have to buy a new fuel pump to fix the problem. I dont really want to do all that to find out it was something much simpler, or if I can actually buy this 1-way valve and just try that. My fuel pump also makes alot of noise. Just the hummmm of a fuel pump but its pretty loud. I have noticed it on other chevys ass well though so I'm not sure if it part of the problem.
