Too much oil pressure?

i was driving today and i notice my oil pressure was very high, around 80 psi, that is as high as the gauge goes. if it idles though, it goes back to normal, around 35-40 psi. i've never seen this before. bad oil pump? clogged line? if so is there any way to test? thanks

Re: Too much oil pressure?

I think 80 is way to high, even cold. What are you running grade-wise? I think the standard is 5W30, but I know that others run 10W30 depending on weather, and age.

Re: Too much oil pressure?

im running 10w30 mobil one synthetic and up until now it has had a positive effect on the motor. it would show higher pressures when i would first start it in the cold. but this time the engine was at running temp. and i was driving it.

Re: Too much oil pressure?

wouldn't something blow out at that pressure??? when this all happened, i expected to open my hood and see the entire engine compartment covered in oil. but it didnt even run or sound any different, and there wasnt a drop of oil anywhere. and i cant find anything that tells me what to do with TOO MUCH oil pressure.
for now, im gonna replace the oil pressure sensor and see if that is the culprit. if not, well... im out of ideas for the time being.
