98 blazer stuck in 4HI

I have a 98 4dr 4x4 Blazer LS that i put into 4hi to back up a small gravel slope and it's now stuck in 4hi. I've tried pushing the 2hi button while in drive, neutral, park, reverse and all i hear is the control module inside switching and the actuator underneath trying to engage/disengae but the transfer case will not unlock the front axle. Anyone have experience with this?? I am not sure of the exact model of the x-fer case. It's a 98 electronic push button on the fly 2hi-4hi-4lo.

i have a 00 and mine likes to stick in 4lo but that is because it is 4lo. it always comes out though. try switching to auto 4 and 4lo alot. just drive alil then rev. then park just mix it up to see it it will disengage.

Re: 98 blazer stuck in 4HI

Thhanks guys. Its fixed now, put it up on my buddy's chassis lift and as soon as the suspension was freehanging, it shifted out just fine. There have been no leaks or any previous instances. Just a fluke i guess. We took it off lift and shifted thru all of the case settings- 2hi, 4hi, 4lo, and back a few times. No more problems. Something just got bound up. Checked all the fluids while it was up there too, everything was up to spec's. Thanks again for the responses and have fun rippin' it up!

Re: 98 blazer stuck in 4HI

my '88 will stay in 4hi from time to time, but I usually drive it up to about 30 mph or so, and drop it from OD down to 1st gear... the engine braking alone will 98% of the time disengage the 4hi.

Yes, Grizz, but your system is vacuum, yes?

I think from '98 onward they went with the electric solenoid.

Still, it was binding issue, but I'm kinda surprised that you had to drop the suspension to get it to work.

I guess that putting it on a lift would be the 'safe' way to do it, but next time just jump it about 4 feet off the ground and see what happens!

Just kidding. Well, sorta...

Not so, J.R. At least not in 99. Vacuum still enganges/disengages the front. The t-case is shifted with an electric motor, though.

Re: 98 blazer stuck in 4HI

Are you sure? I could have sworn that they got rid of the vacuum system from '98 forward. At least I'm pretty positive that my '98 doesn't have the vacuum actuated anything right now.

Now you have me doubting myself. I'll have to go and check it out soon. Just not now. It's dark outside!

1998 and newer are ALL elec. transfer case. So if anyone tells you that its vac. they're misinformed.

Yes, The transfer case makes sense, but what about axle and hub engagements?
