Towing capacity?

I've got an '88 S-15 4x4 2-door with the 2.8 I6 and 700R tranny. I'm looking for the towing capacity. The owners manual is a bit on the vague side with a whole right up on "how it depends". I have a 2800lb trailer I want to tow and I'm assuming it will be fine but would like to know. I already have a class 3, 5000lb hitch on it.
Thanx

Re: Towing capacity?

2800? I'd invest in some stabilizer bars if i were you. and the 2.8 is gonna take forever to get it wound up to highway speed. the 700R4 should handle it though.

Re: Towing capacity?

i had an 85 2.8 and wow you will not move fast but i will definetly pull it. on my 00 4.3 vortec with an 700r4 will pull up to about 5000 so your should be able to handle 2800. just have an extra hour or so for long trips cuz you wont be going 70 on the freeway
