I posted a question earlier about the 4.3. And as always somebody had to throw the V-8 idea in there. Now I am considering using a 305. I am just looking for opinions on which is the better motor. It will be bolted to a Jeep T-5 tranny. I would go the 350 route but I just don't want to get to much torque because I would like the tranny to last for awhile. Sorry for rambling. Thanks Jay
the 4.3 is a good motor but with a small block (305) you have many more perfomance options. The stock 4.3 vortec in my Blazer puts out just as much as a 85 Iroc camaro. But my limitations are performance options. I suggest using what is most avalible to suit your performance needs. If in the future you want 300 hp go with the 305. But the running gear may fail. If you are happy with about 200 hp go with the V-6 vortec. P.S. my Blazer will smoke all 4 with a V-6
92 S-10 Blazer 4x4 Vortec 4.3

Put a 4.3 drivetrain in it you wont be sorry. Ive got a 89 blazer 4x4 and I like it. Good torque Good acceleration, fairly smooth. The 305 is a great engine
but, some work to swap. Just easier to put something where it was intended to be. If You put in a 4.3 and you need more ummph, build it. Have fun with your project, I am Jason
Also the t-5 can handle the 305 it is a great long milage, smooth running engine. Ive drove one 305 equipt car over 200,000 miles, another 190,000 miles. and my brother drove one for 200,000 miles. with NO ENGINE FAILURES. NO TOW INS. Theese cars survied teenagers, OK?
Well I was out looking for motors today. I am having a hard time finding a carbed 4.3 V-6. I new of one but he sold it 2 days ago. Everywhere I go there are a ton of 305's for sale. So it looks like I might end up using a carbed 305. Any particular year to try and get? I wanted to use a V-8 in the first place. I just wasn't sure of the jeeps T-5 tranny strengh. But from what I have read i think it will be ok with a 305. I will probably put in a 350 later on when I have enough money to upgrade the tranny and all the associated stuff. Well thanks again and wish me luck. Jay
A friendly word of warning: the Borg-Warner T5 NWC that came behind most 2.8
is rated at aprox 275ft-lbs. If you go much beyond a stock 305 and goose it
good there is a better than average chance that you will leave large chunks
in the road. According my info '891/2-92 2.8/3.1 did come w/BW T5 WC that
was rated at conservitave 305ft-lbs.

Thanks for the info. I was looking at the Edelbrock site and there it says that a stock 305 only puts out a max of 230 ft/lbs or torque at 2500 rpm's. Does this sound right? They list the 4.3 putting out 240 at 2500. So if the T-5 is rated at 275 ft-lbs I should be alright. I will just have to watch my driving habits. I am going to upgrade to another tranny later when more money is available. Well thanks again. Jay
