Tranny questions...

What different transmissions came in 85 (or actually any S truck with a 60 V6 (so it'll bolt up to my 2.8).) trucks? How do I identify these. I have a 5 speed. I'm having trouble with my second gear synchro (the da#n thing keeps jumping out of gear (started a while ago, for no apparent reason...)... Does anyone know of a stronger transmission to bolt directly in place of this 5 speed? Or would a fresh 5 speed work alright?

Another related question: What kind of fluid should I use in this 5 speed? I think the Haynes manual says ATF, but I was wondering if anyone has had better luck with some other type of lube (10W30, 15W50, gear lube or anything else you've had good luck with) I'd probably be using synthetic lube in there when I do change it... Re: Tranny questions...

Hey Sandman,

Before you go replacing tranny's. See if you can pull the shifter out the the tranny and find some sort of bushing between the shifter and the hole in the tranny. Also, if there is a plastic knob on the end of the shifter, see if you can replace that too.

On Toyotas they would tend to wear out. Once you replaced them they tended to make firmer shifts and would solve a problem like you described.

Oh, and it costs about $15 to replace it plus down time. Beats getting that rebuilt when you don't have to...

Re: Tranny questions...

Thanks for the tip, J.R... I'll definitely check that out! A $15 bushing would be much better for me than a few hundred $$$ tranny...
