4x4 shifter question

Just out of curiosity, I pulled the console cover on my shift levers to see what the 4x4 shifter looks like. All I saw was a short lever (attached to the body), that pulls a metal rod in or out. Since the ground is covered in mud, I didn't get under the truck to see what this metal rod connects to. Now I'm curious, though, as to how the 4x4 shifter works. I know a vacuum is involved, but that's about all. If someone could fill me in as to how that rod engages the front end, that would be great. Thanks.

Re: 4x4 shifter question

I believe the rod moves internal items in the transfer case, which doesn't really engage the front differential I think, it just makes the front output so it'll turn when you are in 4x... I think there's a switch on there that activates when you pull the rod into certain positions, and gives the vacuum actuator the vacuum it needs to engage... I think that's how it is, but not totally sure...
