Is this worth it?

I'm looking at a truck possibility and wanted to get your advise about it. I've got a friend who's got a 1991 f-150 w/ about 40k on a rebuilt 302, and a bad tranny. It's a 4x4, regular cab w/ long bed. I'm not looking for something to build up, just a dd, and occasional hauler for my trial rig. He's asking $700. I know the E4od is a decent tranny when well maintained, but this one is "soft". So it'll need a rebuild. At this point, that's all I know about it. What are your thoughts? what specific things should I look out for?

Thanks
T

Re: Is this worth it?

Get it. Is it manual shift or electric shift transfer case? XL, XLT or Lariat? Hows the paint and body? Any extra things added to the truck? Give some more details...

Re: Is this worth it?

I'm not sure of the trim level or the xfer. I'm going to take a real close look at it this weekend. I'll keep y'all posted.

Re: Is this worth it?

I ended up getting it. It's a 92 Custom. There's nothing wrong with the Tranny. The shake he was complaining about was a loose drive shaft. It's in desperate need of some front brakes and the rear end needs rebuilt. The engine and tranny are strong, and he had the transfer case rebuilt in 99. The body has a few small rust spots in the usual ford spots, over the fenders and near the back of the doors. the interior is in great shape except for the driver door. The handle is missing and the window crank needs some attention. The paint is oxydized also. But the price was right. I traded straight up for a 95 chevy cavalier w/ a leaky head gasket, gas leak, and 165k on the ticker. Basically.. I only paid about $600 for it. (if that)...
All in all, not a bad deal.

Re: Is this worth it?

I'm picking up a 9" rear end this weekend. The pinion bearings are shot and I don't want to put the money into the 8.8.
