OT - want another opinion on engine diag.

Ok, my fiance has a 86 t-bird with a 3.8L v6 with some sort of electronic carb. Its been cutting out really bad, like a miss. We just got done replacing the plugs and wires and checked the timing. It also has new lifters and rod bearings, as of ~5mo ago. It has a sound like a backfire coming from around the carb and gas coming up from the throttle body. It also has a ticking on the pass. side of the motor near the firewall.

I pulled the codes and I get...

22) Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) or BARO sensor out of range.
92) HEGO (HO2S) sensor voltage high/system rich
31) EVP or PFE circuit below minimum voltage.

Now, it has had the 92 and 31 for quite a while, but the 22 is a new one. Anyway, my dad listened to it and thinks its a stuck valve or a bad lifter. What do you guys think is wrong with it? And what would cause those codes to come up? Thanks in advance!

I'd check that MAP sensor first, it's sure to cause all hell to break loose if it's on the blink.

What is it? What does it do? Where is it? How much is that gonna cost? How do I know for sure if its a bad sensor or if its something bad that its sensing?

In other words, I think I'll go and invest in a haynes manual. Thanks!

MAP sensor= manifold absolute pressure sensor does exactly as its described, costs around $50.00 and is a rectangular black thingy about 2X3" with wires and vacumm lines attached to it usually on the right front inner fender panel on 80s. doesn`t autozone test sensors for free now???

the ticking noise, from my experience with 3.8s, most likely is an exhaust leak at the manifold to pipe flange, loosen it, readjust and retighten. i doubt its a bad lifter 5 mos old or a stuck valve but a worst case scenario a rocker bolt pulling loose from the stud boss.

Re: OT - want another opinion on engine diag.

Well, this car has been through he!! and back. The person that had it before never changed the oil and generally abused the car. Since day one (after the lifters were replaced) my dad has thought that they sounded funny (he didn't replace them).

My dad offered to take the valve covers off and take a look. I'll let you know what he finds.
