engine trouble

My 460 heads have a hairline crack in them between vaves. So i was thinking about swaping heads with a 429, what are the disadvantages and advantages to this swap????

Re: engine trouble

Are you getting them from a HD truck or are they early 70s 429 heads from a car? The lack of hardened exhaust seats and different rocker arms on car heads are a few that come to mind, of course a machine shop can solve those minor items. Are you putting them in a late EFI HD truck? The exhaust ports on late 460s are less than half the size of early 429 heads so the manifolds probably wont work.

Re: engine trouble

the 460 is a 1978 model and the heads are from an old 429 car engine

Re: engine trouble

other than the soft pre-unleaded exh. seats, cant think of any disadvantage or problem off-hand, the manifolds should work between those years. If the cracks are not too bad, an experienced head rebuilding machine shop can do a reliable repair to the cracked heads, it may cost as much or more to have hardened exhaust seats put in the earlier 429 heads plus they may need additional machine work like guide liners, (canted valve ford heads such as the 351C, 400M, 429 & 460 wear guides at a faster rate from what i have experienced), so an old 70s head *may* cost a bit to get in shape.
