plastic gears in F550 manual?

Please tell me this isnt true...

I recently started a new job in a Hydraulic pump, cylinder, hose shop and one of my co-workers (a chebby owner but dont seem the type to make up BS...) told me after the discussion of transmissions already came up, that one of our regular customers with a fairly new F550, had his manual trans fail 3 times already and couldnt believe it when the mechanic showed him the defective parts *some* of which were plastic gears (and NOT the speedo drive), is this so?

Re: plastic gears in F550 manual?

Wow. I have no answer to that.
Amazing!
I thought Ford gave up on the plastic gears after all the timing chain problems several years ago.
I'm sure you're one of the folks here that have actually seen those gears from the '70's!

Re: plastic gears in F550 manual?

70s????
my 86~ 302 had one , after the cam gear shed all its teeth at 109K and stopped the oil pump & pick-up screen twice (after a timing set replacement) with the plastic fragments despite flushing the oil pan with sovent, this IS the reason theres a rebuilt 95~5.0 HO under my hood since --------- but in a *550* trans?

Re: plastic gears in F550 manual?

umm, dont know if its the same part, but I've heard a similar story about plastic SYNCHRO gears in newer ford's...something about teflon / thermoplastic baulk rings??? ( I cant see the main gears being plastic, but plastic synchros 'almost' sound plausible..)
